The RCMP-approved CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Course) and CRFSC (Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course) are the two pieces of training mandatory for first-time PAL applicants in Canada. Silvercore teaches both together as one combined PAL course, delivered by instructors certified by the BC Chief Firearms Officer. Two consecutive days or three consecutive evenings, all exams included. The home classroom is the Silvercore training facility at #115-7198 Vantage Way, Delta, BC, and the course also runs in Vancouver at LaSalle College, Langley, New Westminster, Victoria, Nanaimo, Parksville, and the Comox Valley. Taught across British Columbia since 1994.
Who teaches it: every Silvercore instructor is certified by the BC Chief Firearms Officer to teach the CFSC and CRFSC. Founder Travis Bader, an RCMP Master Instructor, has taught firearms safety since 1994, the year the CFSC was introduced, and now trains the instructors who teach at Silvercore.
This course is for first-time PAL applicants and anyone who wants to learn gun safety. It's designed for beginners, with no prior firearm experience required. We start at the basics: firearm types, common actions, ammunition, safe handling, and safe storage. Then we cover the federal regulatory framework, the Canadian Firearms Program, and what's required to apply for your PAL after the course.
Our RCMP-approved curriculum covers both non-restricted firearms (long guns, the CFSC content) and restricted firearms (handguns, the CRFSC content). The RCMP-set minimum runtime is 8 hours for the CFSC alone, plus additional time for the CRFSC and both examinations. Each exam includes a written multiple-choice section and a practical firearms handling test. The combined Silvercore course condenses all of this into two consecutive days or three consecutive evenings.
Passing the CFSC is the federal requirement to apply for a non-restricted PAL. Passing both the CFSC and CRFSC is required to apply for a full PAL with both privileges. The RCMP cannot process a PAL application from a first-time applicant without proof of passing the appropriate course. For a full walkthrough of both courses and how they fit together, read CFSC and CRFSC in BC: The Complete Guide.
This course is taught at Silvercore training locations across BC. The home facility is in Delta, covered in full on the PAL course in Delta page. In the Lower Mainland the course also runs in Vancouver at LaSalle College, 2808 Bradfield Court, across from Renfrew SkyTrain Station, and at Langley and New Westminster. On Vancouver Island it runs at Victoria, Nanaimo, Parksville, and the Comox Valley.
