The Official List of 324 Newly "Banned" Firearms in Canada (Updated 2026)

In December 2024, the federal government added 324 unique makes and models of firearms to Canada's prohibited list. The list, organized into 104 firearm families, took effect immediately on December 5, 2024. Future variants of those families are automatically captured by the regulation.

The list itself has not changed since publication. What has changed is the political and legal environment around it. If you own one of these firearms, the rules that apply to you today are different from the rules that applied when this OIC first came into force. Here's where things stand as of 2026.

Where things stand in 2026

The 324 firearms remain prohibited. A separate prohibition on March 7, 2025 added another 179 makes and models, bringing Canada's total prohibited firearms count to over 2,500.

The original amnesty for the December 2024 ban was set to expire October 30, 2025. In October 2025, the federal government extended and harmonized all three amnesty orders (the 2020 ban, the December 2024 ban, and the March 2025 ban) to a single new expiry date: October 30, 2026.

Justin Trudeau stepped down as Prime Minister in January 2025. Mark Carney was selected as Liberal leader in March 2025 and is the current Prime Minister. Carney has committed to following through with the firearms ban and the compensation program. The change in leadership has not changed the Liberal position on confiscation.

On March 19, 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada granted leave to hear the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights' (CCFR's) challenge to the ban, along with companion cases led by Christine Generoux and Michael Doherty. The governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan are backing the challenge. No hearing date has been set. The CCFR has indicated it will seek an injunction to extend the amnesty past October 30, 2026 until the Court reaches a decision.

What does this mean for me?

If you own one of the 324 firearms on the list:

You must continue to hold a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) to be protected by the amnesty. The amnesty does not transfer ownership rights and does not allow you to use the firearm for hunting or sport shooting. You may not legally sell, transfer, or import these firearms.

The firearm must be stored according to the safe storage rules for its previous classification (non-restricted or restricted, whichever it was before the OIC).

You may transport the firearm only for the limited purposes set out in the Amnesty Order: to a police officer for destruction, to a Mobile Collection Unit, to a licensed carrier for shipping for deactivation, or to an approved deactivation business.

What about the compensation program?

The Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) opened for individual declarations on January 17, 2026. The declaration period closed March 31, 2026 with approximately 67,000 firearms declared, well short of the government's projections. The collection phase is ongoing as of spring 2026.

Canada's three largest firearms advocacy organizations, the National Firearms Association (NFA), the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR), and the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA), have jointly advised gun owners not to participate in the ASFCP, or to withdraw consent if they have already submitted a declaration. Their reasoning: participation is voluntary, the amnesty protection applies regardless of whether you have participated, and the Supreme Court challenge creates legal uncertainty about the underlying ban.

This is information, not advice. Your decision is yours, and depends on your own circumstances, risk tolerance, and view of where the legal challenges are going. If you're weighing the question, the Silvercore Podcast Episode 147 with Daniel Fritter of Calibre Magazine is a useful conversation to listen to.

What happens if the amnesty expires on October 30, 2026?

If the amnesty expires without an extension or injunction, anyone still in possession of one of the prohibited firearms after that date risks criminal liability for unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm under the Criminal Code, and potential loss of their PAL.

This is why the CCFR has indicated it will seek an injunction to extend the amnesty until after the Supreme Court reaches a decision in its challenge. Whether that injunction is granted, and whether the Carney government extends the amnesty further on its own, are open questions as of this writing.

Will the ban be reversed?

The 2025 federal election returned the Liberals to government under Mark Carney, and the Carney government has committed to following through with the ban. A political reversal at the cabinet level is not on the table under current leadership.

The remaining path to reversal runs through the courts. The Supreme Court of Canada granted leave to hear the CCFR's appeal in March 2026. The CCFR argues that the federal cabinet exceeded its authority under the Criminal Code when it used an Order in Council to prohibit more than 2,500 firearms, and that Orders in Council are not meant to be used to enact broad, permanent changes affecting hundreds of thousands of licensed owners and billions in private property. The Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal previously ruled against the CCFR. The Supreme Court is the final stop.

No hearing date has been set. A decision could be months or years out.

Where to find the official information

The detailed list of the 324 unique makes and models is published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, Volume 158, Extra Number 3 (SOR/2024-249).

The current consolidated amnesty order (extending all three amnesty periods to October 30, 2026) is published as SOR/2025-208.

On December 5, 2024, the Trudeau government expanded its federal ban on firearms and announced that an additional 324 makes and models have been added to the prohibited weapons list, effective immediately.
