Training to Prevent “Buck Fever”

Several years ago, Catherine Laflamme of Michael and Young Fly Shop and Gillian Steele of Highwater Tackle set out to lower the barriers to new anglers getting into the sport of fishing. The two recount repeatedly hearing the same questions from new anglers:
- What type of rod should I use?
- Where is a good place to learn to fish?
- How do I know what is legal to catch and what isn’t?
- How do I read the fishing regulations?
- What fish are currently in season?
- Where can I trout or steelhead fish?
- And an endless number of good, but common questions…
Moreover, Gill and Cat found that there was a definite lack of resources in BC’s lower mainland which specifically welcomed woman anglers to the sport. Rather than waiting for that vacuum to be filled, these two industrious anglers created the BC Womans Fly Fishing Group which fosters a non-threatening environment where new and experienced anglers alike can meet other like minded woman and share their passion and enthusiasm for the sport.
Travis had the chance to spend an enjoyable evening with Cat, Gill and Tiffany learning more about how this group got started, what they do and getting a detailed overview of a fishing calendar presentation that the group gave at a recent meeting.
